[ Isdraken ] is a 2012 Swedish children’s film directed by Pepe Abedi. The story follows Mikke, a shy boy ridiculed by peers for his large ears, who lives with his older brother Tony and their alcoholic former-drummer father in a Stockholm suburb. After a social services intervention, Mikke is temporarily placed in the small town of Sälvik with his aunt Lena. There, he befriends Philip, Pey, and Oskar, and together they form “The Cat Factory”, a club dedicated to building the legendary “Ice Dragon Car”. Through camaraderie and imaginative adventures, Mikke gradually overcomes his insecurities, embarking on a journey of self-acceptance, belonging, and childhood wonder. The film tenderly explores the inner world of marginalized children, blending Nordic austerity with whimsical fantasy in a quiet yet deeply moving narrative.
Adapted from the bestselling Swedish children’s novel by Erica Lunde, the film is endorsed by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Corporation (UR) as recommended viewing for primary and secondary schools. It premiered at multiple Nordic Children’s Film Festivals, earning widespread acclaim from educators and young audiences for its heartfelt storytelling and artistic depth.
