“Outdoor Immersive Drama – Shekou Latitude: Whale Song” scripted by Yang Qian, a recipient of the prestigious Cao Yu Drama Literature Award, is a pioneering outdoor theatrical game co – presented by the China Merchants Foundation and the Design Society Cultural Foundation, and produced by Performance Interconnection. As a limited – time cultural event, this production seamlessly merges classic theatrical performance with escape – room mechanics. It utilizes sound as the primary vehicle for puzzle – solving, weaving a surreal, captivating narrative through spoken – word storytelling.
The production successfully balances the high interactivity of an escape room with the thematic depth of immersive murder mystery games. During early pre – production, the executive producer conducted extensive market research and engaged in deep technical consultations with industry experts to master the mechanics of these emerging formats. Following multiple rounds of strategic brainstorming, the team engineered a proprietary production framework tailored specifically to this highly unconventional project.
Our studio spearheaded the comprehensive audio production for this experiential event, covering sound design, original score composition, voice talent recording, and post – production mixing to deliver a deeply immersive sonic experience for every participant.

Music
For a two – and – a – half – hour immersive production where auditory cues drive the entire narrative, the musical score became the most technically demanding phase of development. Capturing a refined artistic aesthetic while embedding precise, actionable narrative clues within the music presented an extraordinary creative challenge. Structuring a narrative that spans 7 distinct chapters and 16 separate environments required a rigorous approach to pacing and complex plot development. Through iterative design and extensive collaboration, our music department successfully maintained narrative cohesion while providing players with clear, intuitive sonic cues, leveraging the power and elegance of music to engage each participant’s investigative journey.
SFX
“Is what you see right now real?” This creative premise – inviting players to walk the active streets of Shekou to experience hidden auditory dimensions of highly visible, everyday environments – profoundly inspired our sound designers. To authentically capture the acoustic environments required by the script, our team conducted extensive on – site field recordings. Utilizing cinematic audio principles, they engineered highly evocative soundscapes that successfully established two coexisting worlds: the concrete reality of our daily lives, and a surreal, unpopulated parallel universe devoid of vehicular noise.
Performance
The whale – a singer of the deep sea and a guide through space and time – serves as a critical narrative element in this production. To bring this creature to life with distinct emotional weight, our team curated a massive library of marine acoustic reference materials, including the famous 52 – Hz whale call, alongside vocalizations from sperm whales, blue whales, and baleen whales. After auditing and manipulating over a thousand distinct source files, we successfully designed a surreal, elegant, and spiritually resonant character voice.
Audio Post – Production
Sound serves as a vital pillar for environmental world – building and narrative reinforcement in this project. Our post – production workflow integrated original score composition, ambient sound design, and multi – track mixing. The team focused heavily on emotional pacing, rhythmic synchronization, and spatial soundfield engineering to ensure the audio seamlessly unified with the physical environments. Through calculated emotional guidance in the score and high – fidelity ambient restoration, we significantly enhanced the realism of each scene. Executed entirely by our post – production team, this phase was critical to delivering a flawless end – to – end audio workflow.
