“Dong Minority Folk Songs” As the essence of Dong ethnic culture, nearly every village maintains amateur singing troupes that preserve and transmit the Dong people’s rich musical legacy. Dong folk music is broadly categorized into two distinct regional styles.Southern Dong Music: Characterized by elaborate instrumental accompaniment, including the pipa (lute) and niu-ti qin (bull-leg fiddle), this style features richly layered melodies that mirror the lush landscapes of the region.Northern Dong Music: Predominantly vocal-based, this tradition emphasizes pure human harmonies, occasionally enhanced by the subtle use of a leaf flute. Its simplicity evokes a sense of spiritual clarity and ancestral connection.

The folk songs take diverse forms, including: **”grand song” (big song)** – multi-voice chorus with majestic scope; **”small song”** – simple and graceful, expressing delicate emotions; **”square song”** – lively and easy to sing; **”narrative song”** – lyrical and storytelling; **”banquet song”** – enthusiastic and celebratory; and **”road-blocking song”** – used in social settings to convey feelings. These varied forms showcase the rich diversity and unique charm of Dong folk music. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the *grand song* tradition stands as a vibrant testament to the Dong people’s artistic and communal spirit.
