“Morrison krjjgt een zusje” (also known as “The Lost Only Son”) is a 2008 Dutch family drama directed by Marloes van den Heuvel. The film follows five-year-old Morrison, who once enjoyed being the sole center of his parents’ attention. When his mother becomes pregnant and his beloved pet cat must be rehomed due to health complications, Morrison feels abruptly abandoned. Overwhelmed by loss and neglect, he retreats into silence, defiance, and small acts of rebellion. Through innocent, heartfelt attempts to reclaim his world, he gradually learns that love is not a finite resource—it is warmth to be shared. The film authentically captures the emotional turbulence of a child adjusting to siblinghood, delicately exploring jealousy, loneliness, and eventual acceptance from a child’s perspective.

Adapted from the beloved picture book by Dutch children’s author Annemarie Schuiten, the film is widely used in Dutch primary and secondary schools within the “Family and Emotional Education” curriculum. It was praised by Dutch educational broadcaster NTR as “one of the finest children’s films to help young audiences understand family transitions.”
