“Isdraken” is a 2012 Swedish children’s feature film directed by Martin Hogdahl. The story follows Mik, a shy boy frequently teased for his large ears, who lives in a Stockholm suburb with his older brother Tony and their alcoholic father, a former rock band drummer. Following an intervention by social services, Mik is temporarily relocated to Sälvik, a small northern town where his aunt Lena lives. There, he connects with new friends Pi, Filip, and Oskar, and together they start a cat factory and plan a legendary ice dragon sled. Fueled by friendship and imagination, Mik begins to open his heart, embarking on a moving journey toward self – acceptance, belonging, and childhood wonder. The film blends a stark Nordic visual aesthetic with whimsical childhood fantasy, delivering a quiet yet deeply moving narrative.
Adapted from the bestselling Swedish children’s novel by Mikael Engstrom, the film is officially recommended for schools by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Corporation and has been showcased at multiple Nordic film festivals, earning high acclaim from educators and young audiences alike.
