“Master Ji Gong” directed by Liu Zhijiang and Qiao Yu, with Jin Dong and Liu Zheng serving as executive producers, is an animated feature film co – produced by Zhejiang Ruichen Pictures and Beacon Pictures that premiered nationwide in 2021. Inspired by the widely circulated Chinese folktale of Ji Gong – the Living Buddha – the film follows young Li Xiuyuan on a heroic journey to save his mother. Bonding with the mythical Azure Fire Dragon, he endures profound inner struggles and trials before awakening as Ji Gong, ultimately stepping forward to confront a celestial calamity and protect humanity. Blending Eastern fantasy aesthetics with modern animation techniques, the film reimagines a classic character coming-of-age arc while delivering a powerful message of compassion and selfless courage.

Recognized for its artistic excellence, the film was selected for the Media Focus Section at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival, earning widespread industry acclaim. It received consecutive grants in 2018 and 2019 from the National Film Administration under the Chinese Classic Folktales Animation Initiative, highlighting its cultural value in modernizing traditional stories. In 2021, the film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 18th China Anime Golden Dragon Awards.

Music

To deepen the narrative layers and emotional resonance, our music team crafted thematic motifs tailored to key story beats. For the poignant sequence where Xiuyuan bids farewell to his father before battling the Golden – Winged Demon, somber melodies and low – string textures underscore the heavy sacrifice and solitary courage. The climactic Father-Son vs. Jinling battle utilizes orchestral tension to highlight the clash between familial love and destiny. Conversely, the playful Stealing the Golden Body sequence features lighthearted, brisk rhythms that elevate the comedic timing. Every cue was meticulously refined through multiple iterations to seamlessly synchronize with the visual pacing and emotional shifts, maximizing the film’s narrative impact.

Sound Effects

From the subtle drip of cave water and rustle of leaves to earth – shattering explosions and intense magical duels, rich sonic details ground the film’s fantasy world in realism and impact. Our sound team captured extensive field recordings of authentic cultural objects, including pellet drums, prayer beads, and palm-leaf fans. As a recurring symbolic prop, the pellet drum required a sonic evolution that mirrored the protagonist’s growth. The team sourced dozens of drum variants, experimented with different striking techniques, and archived over 10 hours of raw source material. Through spectral analysis and artistic processing, we shaped a signature soundscape: bright, mid-to-high frequencies with brisk rhythms in early scenes reflect the boy’s mischief, while later scenes introduce deep, resonant lows and spatial reverb to imbue the instrument with ritual gravitas and heroic symbolism, turning sound into a vital narrative device.

Creatures Vocalization

The film features an array of mythical creatures and animals, each requiring a delicate balance between organic biological plausibility and expressive performance. Our team utilized multi – species vocal layering and advanced acoustic synthesis to craft distinct auditory identities. For instance, the ox in the opening scene blends bovine bellows with acoustic characteristics of donkeys, horses, and dogs to heighten its personality and dramatic expression. The Azure Fire Dragon, Xiuyuan’s spiritual companion, integrates low – frequency rumbles from elephants and blue whales to create a majestic, living presence, reinforcing its role as a mythic totem and emotional anchor.

Voice  Production

As a fully post – synced animated feature, every line of dialogue had to precisely match the character lip movements, emotional nuance, and performance rhythm. Over a grueling 700 – day production cycle, our voice team refined the performances through exhaustive ADR sessions, meticulously adjusting intonation, breath control, pacing, and micro – expressions. Special attention was paid to Xiuyuan’s vocal evolution: his tone subtly matures across the story – from youthful brightness to the grounded warmth of Ji Gong – ensuring a seamless alignment between character development and vocal performance to deliver emotionally authentic, vivid characters.

Final Mix

To guarantee consistent, high – fidelity playback across modern cinema environments, we mixed the film in a certified theatrical dub stage equipped with professional – grade monitoring systems. The final mix underwent rigorous on – site testing and field playback calibration in representative commercial theaters, allowing us to perform targeted optimizations for low – end response, dynamic range, and dialogue intelligibility under varying acoustic conditions. This iterative workflow ensured that the soundtrack delivers a stable, clear, and dimensionally rich auditory experience, whether screened in a premium IMAX auditorium or a standard multiplex.
