“KaiFeng Qi Tan” (Original title: Zhe Ge Bao Gong Bu Tai Xing) is a hit historical comedy manga created by artist Xiaochen Shou, serialized on the U17 original comics platform since 2014. Set during the Northern Song Dynasty, the series reimagines the legendary tales of Judge Bao solving bizarre cases in Kaifeng Prefecture through a sharp, modern comedic lens. Blending detective mystery, witty banter, and meta – humor, it shatters the traditional iron – faced, stern archetype to deliver a highly relatable, quick – witted, and justice – driven version of Judge Bao that has won a massive following among young adults.

The work won the Grand Prize at the 2015 U17 Manga Awards, cementing its status as one of the platform’s most popular original comedies. Its success spearheaded a major industry trend of adapting historical figures with internet – friendly, youthful dynamics, expanding into animated series, audio dramas, and cross – media merchandise – a textbook example of print – era comics successfully converting into a high – value pan – entertainment IP.

During the animation process, the vocal script acts as the definitive roadmap for the entire production’s performance and pacing. It dictates the speech rhythm, emotional arc, and comedic timing of the characters; in a stylized comedy, the inflection of a single line or the duration of a pause directly impacts the comedic payoff and vitality of the scene. Therefore, the script is less about what is written and more about how it is performed. Our team took charge of the pre – production audio phase, recording the voice tracks for core characters like Judge Bao, Zhan Zhao, and Gongsun Ce based on the original script. Before a single frame of animation was drawn, we brought the characters’ personalities to life through vocal performance. This early voice track served as an audio blueprint for the animators, providing the essential reference for lip – syncing, character movement, and comedic pacing, ensuring flawless audiovisual synchronization. Additionally, we handled the sound design, music editing, and final mixing, ensuring a comprehensive, cinema – grade audio system for the entire series.
