“Morrison krjjgt een zusje” (also known as “The Lost Only Son”) directed by Marloes van den Heuvel, is a 2008 Dutch family drama. The film follows five – year – old Morrison, who has long enjoyed being the center of his parents’ world. When his mother becomes pregnant and his beloved pet cat is given away due to pregnancy – related health issues, Morrison is overwhelmed by feelings of neglect and isolation, reacting with silence, defiance, and minor acts of rebellion. Through his innocent, heartfelt attempts to navigate this transition, he gradually learns that family love can expand to welcome a sibling. The film beautifully captures the psychological shifts a child experiences when a new sibling arrives, masterfully depicting jealousy, loneliness, and ultimate acceptance from a child’s unique perspective.

Adapted from the bestselling picture book by Dutch children’s author Annemarie Schuiten, the film is a staple in the family and emotional education curricula of primary schools across the Netherlands. It was named by the Dutch educational broadcaster NTR as one of the finest tools for helping young children adapt to family transitions.
