[ De Brief voor de Koning ] is a co-production of Dutch public broadcaster VPRO and German studio Bavaria Film, directed by Jan Becher and released in 2008. Adapted from the acclaimed Dutch children’s novel of the same name by Tonke Dragt—a national literary treasure—the film follows Tiuri, a young squire who, on the night of his coming-of-age trial, accepts a secret mission to deliver a critical letter after aiding an injured knight. His perilous journey across forests and mountains becomes a test of loyalty and courage, forcing him to unravel a hidden royal crisis before time runs out. Blending rites-of-passage themes with classical chivalric ideals, the film stands as a landmark in European youth adventure cinema, praised for its taut narrative and profound moral undertones.

The film won the award for “Live-Action Feature or Video—Foreign Language” at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, one of the world’s oldest and most respected children’s film competitions. It was also selected as recommended viewing for Dutch primary and secondary schools. Since its 2010 Chinese debut on CCTV-6 (Movie Channel), it has become a celebrated cultural bridge in Sino-Dutch exchanges, winning widespread acclaim among young Chinese audiences.
