“KaiFeng Qi Tan” (Original title: Zhe Ge Bao Gong Bu Tai Xing) is a comedic historical manga created by artist Xiaochen Shou, serialized on the U17 original comics platform since 2014. Set during Emperor Renzong’s reign in the Northern Song Dynasty, the series reimagines the classic tales of Judge Bao solving peculiar cases in Kaifeng Prefecture through a lighthearted, modern lens. Blending mystery, witty banter, and absurd comedy, it breaks away from the traditional “stern and impartial” portrayal, crafting a relatable, quick-witted yet righteous version of Judge Bao that has resonated strongly with young readers.
With its distinctive comedic style and innovative characterizations, the work won the 2015 “U17 Manga Awards Grand Prize,” becoming one of the platform’s most popular original comedy comics at the time. Its success helped pioneer a trend of modernized, internet-friendly adaptations of historical figures in Chinese comics, subsequently spawning animated series, audio dramas, and other media formats—establishing it as a representative case of “print-era comics transforming into pan-entertainment IP.”
This audio excerpt adapts a story from the animated adaptation of KaiFeng Qi Tan. The scene features Liu Shichang, an elderly farmer, and the young Bao Zheng. To file his complaint, Liu obstinately insists an elderly farmer adopt him as a son, repeatedly shouting “Gan Die!” (adopted father) with absurd persistence. The humor intensifies through the farmer’s thick Henan dialect and rapid-fire dialogue, creating a hilariously chaotic scenario masterfully brought to life by voice actors with impeccable comedic timing.

Liu Shichang: Early 20s – Youthful timbre with obsequious undertones. A petty man born of humble origins who survives by flattery. Poisoned and murdered while traveling to take the imperial exams, he returns as a ghost seeking justice from Bao Zheng. The voice actor delivers exaggerated, fast-paced performances that absurdly amplify his ridiculousness, making his antics both ridiculous and unforgettable.
The Elderly Farmer: Around 60 years old – Deep, rustic voice infused with a thick Henan dialect. Portrays the character’s simple-minded sincerity through grounded, earthy vocal delivery.
Bao Zheng (Young Version): Early 20s – Youthful yet composed timbre radiating justice. Contrasting the traditional portrayal, this Bao Zheng is lively and witty. The voice actor balances fast-paced dialogue with playful intonation, ensuring the character remains morally upright while delivering sharp comedic moments.
