“Nanshan PSAs – Shenzhen 26th Summer Universiade” In 2011 the 26th Summer Universiade was held in Shenzhen—the third time China had hosted the event, following Beijing 2001 and Harbin 2009. Against stiff competition from cities such as Russia, Spain, Poland and Taipei, Shenzhen was chosen as the host city. On 12 August, under the slogan “Start Here,” the Games opened in this emblematic city of reform and opening-up; the torch relay had been ignited at Tsinghua University.

President Hu Jintao attended the ceremony, which was hosted by Yuan Guiren and Liu Peng. A total of 7,865 athletes from 152 countries and regions competed in 306 events. The Chinese delegation set a new record with 75 gold medals, bringing the Games to a flawless close.
